Williamson, who hit his 33rd Test century, built crucial partnerships with Rachin Ravindra (44) and Daryl Mitchell (60)
Kane Williamson’s masterful century has left England facing a heavy defeat in the third Test at Seddon Park. Williamson scored a composed 156 runs, helping New Zealand set a massive target of 658 runs for England to chase. By the end of the third day, England was struggling at 18 for 2, still needing 640 runs to avoid defeat.
England’s troubles started early as they were bowled out for just 143 in their first innings. Without their captain Ben Stokes, who left the field due to a hamstring injury, the visitors struggled to contain New Zealand’s batting. Williamson, who hit his 33rd Test century, built crucial partnerships with Rachin Ravindra (44) and Daryl Mitchell (60).
Williamson’s innings included 11 fours and two sixes, with his milestone moments delighting the home crowd. He survived some close calls, including a missed catch by Ollie Pope on 86 and an lbw review on 73 that went his way. However, his dismissal came when he top-edged a sweep off Shoaib Bashir, caught by substitute fielder Rehan Ahmed.
England’s spinners provided some resistance, with Jacob Bethell taking three wickets, including Mitchell and the retiring Tim Southee. But the hosts kept the pressure on, with Mitchell Santner smashing five sixes in his quick 49.
When England came out to bat again, they quickly lost openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Crawley fell lbw to Matt Henry for the sixth time in the series, while Southee bowled Duckett in his first over.
With two days remaining, England faces an uphill battle to save the match, trailing New Zealand’s dominant performance.
