Olympics qualification model finalised as ICC discusses 32-team T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has begun considering the expansion of the T20 World Cup to 32 teams in the future editions of the tournament.

During its annual meeting in Singapore, the ICC made a key decision regarding cricket's participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It was decided that a hybrid qualification model will be adopted for Olympic qualification.

Under this model, some teams will qualify directly for the Olympics based on ICC T20I rankings, while others will have to earn their place through global qualifier tournaments.

India, currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings, is expected to secure a direct spot regardless of the cut-off date due to its top position.

The ICC Board also formed a working group during the meeting to evaluate the structure and future of all three formats of international cricket. The group will present various proposals aimed at shaping the game’s long-term direction.

One of the key proposals discussed was the inclusion of 32 teams in future editions of the T20 World Cup. Additionally, the idea of dividing Test cricket into two separate divisions was also brought up for consideration.

On the other hand, no expansion is currently planned for the format of the 50-over World Cup. The 2023 edition featured 10 teams, and the same number is likely to be retained for the next tournament as well. All these suggestions are currently in the consultation phase.
