Latif criticized the PCB for not establishing a selection system based on player performance
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has expressed serious concerns about the selection process of the national cricket team following their disappointing loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group stage.
Speaking on a post-match analysis show, Latif criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not establishing a selection system based on player performance rather than personal connections. He highlighted the need for leadership to be based on merit, stating that true meritocracy can only exist if those at the top have the necessary cricketing knowledge.
Latif questioned the team’s composure and decision-making during the match, pointing out the absence of a specialist spinner and a reliable opening batsman.
“This isn’t just about one bad game. We’ve been saying for a long time that this team is not selected on merit. How can a team be on merit if the chairman himself isn’t?” he remarked.
He further noted that systemic issues in leadership trickle down to the players, leading to repeated mistakes. Latif referenced past controversies in team selection and Pakistan’s struggles in major tournaments, emphasizing the need for qualified leadership to ensure better performance.
