The opening ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy in Karachi was kicked off with an exciting and dazzling aerobatic display by the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Sherdil Squadron.

The match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Bank Stadium was preceded by a spectacular flypast, which was the main highlight of the ceremony. This event marked the return of the PAF aerobatic display to Karachi after a five-year break.

The Sherdil Squadron, meaning "lion-hearted" in Urdu, showcased their incredible skills by flying Karakoram-8 aircraft and performing complex maneuvers, such as barrel rolls, loops, and bomb bursts, with colorful smoke. The display was further enhanced by the inclusion of Pakistani-made JF-17 Thunder and F-16 fighter jets, leaving the crowd in awe.

The opening ceremony was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, who was the chief guest, along with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

To ensure the safety and smooth execution of the flypast, a specific air corridor was closed from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm, with rehearsals taking place from February 17 to 19. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to manage air traffic during this period. Commercial flights arriving at Karachi Airport were instructed to carry extra fuel and take necessary precautions.

This was the first-ever PAF flypast at a Champions Trophy opening ceremony, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
