Unique batting record created during Pakistan-Australia Test match

Ever since Test cricket started in 1877, there have been only three instances where teams have been able to put up three 100-run opening stand in both innings of a Test match.

The Rawalpindi Test between Pakistan and Australia is the most recent one to be added to the list of unique record.

Adelaide Test in 1947 played between Australia and England was the first instance where three hundred run opening stand were scored.

During the fourth Test of the series Leonard Hutton (94) and Cyril Washbrook (65) put up 137 run for the first wicket in the first innings. The same pair added 100 run for the first wicket in the second innings Hutton (76) and Washbrook (39). 

England managed to score 116 run for the first wicket in the fourth inning of the Test, Merv Harvey (31) and Arthur Morris (124*) helped England to save the Test which ended in a draw after seven days of battle between the two teams. 

India v Bangladesh, Mirpur 2007

Almost 60 years later, India were able to equal the unique record in May 2007. The Men in Blue set an unusual record which is hard to beat as they scored three hundred run opening partnerships in the same innings of the Test.

Dinesh Karthik and Wasim Jaffer opened for India adding 175 runs before Karthik was forced to retire due to cramps on Tea Day 1. Rahul Dravid then paired up with Wasim Jaffer and added 106 runs before Jaffer was unable to continue due to dehydration and nausea.

Sachin Tendulkar was the fourth batsman to continue the first wicket partnership alongside Rahul Dravid, the pair added 127 runs until Dravid was out caught on the bowling of Muhammad Rafique.

Karthik walked in again and continued his innings to complete his century, all four batsman Jaffer (138), Karthik (129), Dravid (129) , Tendulker (122*) scored centuries helping India to score a mammoth total of 610/3 d, India went on to win the match by an innings and 239 runs.

The inaugural Test between Pakistan and Australia became the third instance where three hundred run opening partnerships were made. Abdullah Shafique (44) and Imam-ul-Haq (157) added 105 runs for the first wicket in their first innings, the same pair added 252* in the second innings.

Usman Khwaja (97) and David Warner (68) put up 156 runs for the first wicket before Warner got cleaned up by Sajid Khan. Although the Pindi Test produced a dead wicket, batsmen made full use of it to score runs and establish new records.
