Pakistan fell short in the first ODI against Australia at the MCG, where a low-scoring contest turned intense as both teams fought hard, but Australia ultimately edged out the victory.

Pakistan, who posted a modest total of 203, saw glimpses of promise from their bowlers, especially Haris Rauf, who put up a thrilling display. However, it wasn’t enough to secure the win as Australia’s captain Pat Cummins anchored his side with an unbeaten 32 to take the game.

As Pakistan prepares for the second ODI, there are three critical areas they need to address to make a comeback in the series.

1. Batters Need to Step Up
Pakistan’s batting lineup struggled on the MCG's bouncy surface, with none of the batters converting their starts into significant scores. Babar Azam and captain Mohammad Rizwan scored 37 and 44 respectively, but neither could push past the 50-run mark. Rizwan’s 71-ball innings put the team under pressure, highlighting the need for faster scoring.

Naseem Shah’s late cameo of 40 runs off 39 balls was a saving grace, helping Pakistan reach over 200. Moving into the next match, Pakistan’s batters will need to take responsibility and play with more intent to give their bowlers a better total to defend.

2. Adopting a Modern ODI Approach
Pakistan’s approach in the first ODI was criticized as outdated, reminiscent of a slower style of play. Rizwan’s strike rate of 61.97, along with Abdullah Shafique and Agha Salman's slow scoring, created pressure on the middle order. Meanwhile, Australia chased down the target inside 34 overs despite losing eight wickets, thanks to an aggressive mindset.

To compete, Pakistan’s batters must adopt a more proactive approach. Faster scoring and better rotation of strike will be essential if they want to keep up with Australia’s fast-paced game.

3. Sharper Yorker Execution Needed
While Pakistan’s bowlers did well to bring the game back, they missed a crucial opportunity to tighten their grip in the closing stages. Australia was reduced to 155/7 and later 185/8, but Pakistan’s inability to bowl effective yorkers allowed Cummins to take control and steer his side to victory.

With skilled bowlers like Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah in their ranks, Pakistan has the resources to perfect their death bowling. Focusing on accurate yorkers will be vital to preventing late runs and sealing tight matches.
