Both Bashir and Ahmed have found their Urdu skills useful while playing in Pakistan, sometimes giving them an edge on the field
Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed recently talked about their Urdu skills and experiences with the Pakistan cricket team during the Multan Test. Bashir, who has impressed with six wickets in the ongoing England-Pakistan Test series, shared a funny moment involving Pakistan's wicketkeeper, Mohammad Rizwan.
Bashir mentioned that while his spoken Urdu isn't perfect, he can understand what the Pakistan players are saying during the match. When he went out to bat, Rizwan cleverly tried to confuse him. Rizwan told his teammates to switch to Pashto, a regional language spoken in Pakistan, making it hard for Bashir to follow the conversation.
"I can understand everything and I can reply, but it’s a bit broken. Sometimes the Pakistan team are speaking in their own language and we’re trying to get hints. I’ll go to Ben Stokes and say ‘he’s going to slog it over mid-wicket. I went out to bat, Mohammad Rizwan was behind the stumps and he likes talking. As soon as I went out he said ‘This guy understands Urdu, let's speak Pashto’, and I had no idea what was being said," Bashir said while speaking to BBC Sport.

Bashir, who has Pakistani parents, shared his feelings about supporting both England and Pakistan.
"I was born in England, so I’ve always been an England fan. Whenever Pakistan played India or whoever, I supported Pakistan. I loved watching the Ashes and highlights of England cricket. Pakistan was my second team," he added.
