South African pacer Corbin Bosch has made history in Test cricket by taking a wicket on the very first ball of his career
South African pacer Corbin Bosch has made history in Test cricket by taking a wicket on the very first ball of his career. The right-arm fast bowler became the fifth South African player to achieve this rare feat.
Bosch accomplished this achievement during the first Test of the ongoing two-match series against Pakistan at Supersport Park in Centurion. He made an immediate impact after being introduced into the attack following the drinks break.
On his first delivery, Bosch bowled a full ball that moved across Pakistan's Shan Masood. Masood, perhaps losing concentration, played a loose drive away from his body and edged the ball to gully, where Marco Jansen took a brilliant catch. Masood was out for 17 runs off 58 balls, and Bosch had made his mark.
With this wicket, Bosch became the third pacer in 2024 to take a wicket on the first ball of their Test career, joining Shamar Joseph and Tshepo Moreki. It is the first time in Test history that three bowlers have achieved this feat in the same year.
Earlier in 2024, Shamar Joseph dismissed Steven Smith on his first ball in January, and Tshepo Moreki got Devon Conway out in February. Bosch's achievement makes him the 25th bowler in Test history to take a wicket on the first ball of their career.
Bosch also became the fifth South African bowler to do so, following Bert Vogler, Dane Piedt, Hardus Viljoen, and Tshepo Moreki.
Here's the list of South African bowlers who have taken a wicket on the first ball of their Test career:
1. Bert Vogler vs England at Johannesburg, 1906
2. Dane Piedt vs Zimbabwe at Harare, 2014
3. Hardus Viljoen vs England at Johannesburg, 2016
4. Tshepo Moreki vs New Zealand at Mount Maunganui, 2024
5. Corbin Bosch vs Pakistan at Centurion, 2024
