Renowned Indian cricket commentator, Harsha Bhogle, has expressed his belief that Pakistan might have stumbled upon the ideal opening batsman in the form of Abdullah Shafique as they prepare for the 2023 World Cup.

Shafique, who marked his presence with a maiden ODI fifty during the Super 4 clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, left a strong impression on Bhogle.

“Sometimes you stumble onto the right decision. Pakistan may well have found the right opener for the World Cup in Abdullah Shafique,” Bhogle wrote on X.

Shafique playing against Sri Lanka was unplanned, prompted by opener Imam-ul-Haq's back spasm and Saud Shakeel's illness. However, in this crucial match, Shafique stepped up to the plate alongside captain Babar Azam, contributing significantly to a 64-run partnership that was pivotal for Pakistan.

Shafique's fifty, achieved in 65 deliveries, featured three boundaries and two sixes in his impressive 52-run innings.
