Chasing a challenging total of 221, Pakistan's batting lineup crumbled under pressure, ultimately being bowled out for just 105 runs
Pakistan endured their heaviest defeat in T20I history, losing to New Zealand by a massive 115 runs in the fourth T20I at Bay Oval on Sunday.
Chasing a challenging total of 221, Pakistan's batting lineup crumbled under pressure, ultimately being bowled out for just 105 runs. This crushing defeat marks Pakistan’s biggest loss in terms of runs in T20 internationals, surpassing their previous record of a 95-run defeat in 2016.
Ironically, their previous record for the largest defeat also came against New Zealand, this time in Wellington. Additionally, this win by New Zealand is their second-largest winning margin in T20Is, falling just short of their previous record of a 118-run victory over the West Indies in 2018, also at Bay Oval.
Pakistan's chase got off to a disastrous start as they lost their top three batsmen in quick succession within the first two overs. Openers Mohammad Haris (2), Hasan Nawaz (1), and captain Salman Ali Agha (1) were dismissed early, leaving Pakistan struggling at 9-3.
The Pakistan team’s troubles deepened when vice-captain Shadab Khan fell for just one run in the fifth over, leaving the side in a precarious position at 26-4 after only 4.1 overs. The wickets continued to fall regularly as Pakistan's batsmen failed to stabilize their innings against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack.
The only highlight in Pakistan’s batting performance came from Abdul Samad, who scored a valiant 44 off 30 balls, which included two sixes and four fours. However, his efforts were not enough to avoid defeat, as the team was bowled out for a modest total in 16.2 overs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack was led by Jacob Duffy, who was the star performer with the ball, taking four wickets in his four overs. Zakary Foulkes also made a significant impact, claiming three wickets.
