Pakistan batter Abdullah Shafique has officially signed with Yorkshire County Cricket Club as an overseas player for the ongoing season. He is expected to join the squad next week and will be available for selection in both red and white-ball formats.

The 25-year-old will feature in Yorkshire’s upcoming County Championship fixtures against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and Surrey at York. Additionally, he will play in the final four matches of the group stage of the Vitality Blast.

Known for his solid technique and elegant stroke play, Shafique has already scored five centuries in just 22 Test matches for Pakistan. His inclusion is seen as a major boost to Yorkshire’s batting lineup.

Shafique arrives in England following a strong Pakistan Super League (PSL) campaign, where he scored 390 runs at an average of 32. He played a key role in Lahore Qalandars’ title win last month, scoring a crucial 41 in the final.

Speaking about the move, Shafique expressed his excitement over joining the club and playing in English conditions.

“I’m immensely pleased to be afforded this opportunity with Yorkshire and I’m eager to join up with the team ahead of a big game against Nottinghamshire,” he said.

“Headingley is a venue I’ve always wanted to play at and I’m excited to experience a Roses fixture which I’ve already heard will have an incredible atmosphere," he added.

“There is so much history at this club, and I hope I can contribute on the pitch during this important phase of the season,” he further added.

Yorkshire Men’s Head Coach Anthony McGrath also welcomed the signing, praising Shafique’s ability and experience.

“Abdullah is another technically gifted, all-format player that we are delighted has signed with us,” McGrath said.

“He has a tremendous skillset and has scored big runs at the highest level. This is a really positive signing for us that will strengthen us greatly. We’re all looking forward to Abdullah joining up with the squad next week,” he concluded.
