Pakistani-born all-rounder Muhammad Abbas has earned his first central contract as New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced its list of contracted players for the 2025–26 season, signalling a fresh wave of talent in the national setup.

The 21-year-old, who was born in Lahore and moved to New Zealand as a child, is among four new faces added to the central contract list. He joins Mitch Hay, Zak Foulkes, and Adithya Ashok as part of a new generation being backed by the Black Caps’ selectors.

Abbas rose to prominence earlier this year after smashing a 26-ball 52 on his ODI debut against Pakistan, setting a new record for the fastest half-century by a debutant in men’s ODIs. His dynamic style, coupled with his all-round ability, has made him one of the most exciting young prospects in the country.

“Muhammad’s fearless approach and adaptability stood out,” a New Zealand Cricket spokesperson said.

“He brings fresh energy to the team and embodies the spirit of modern New Zealand cricket,” he added.

While Abbas’ rise has made headlines, this year’s contract list also reflects a significant shift in the national squad. Veteran spinner Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, and Josh Clarkson, have not been offered contracts for the upcoming season.

Additionally, discussions are still ongoing regarding casual playing contracts for experienced names such as Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson.
