Australia captain Pat Cummins is doubtful for the ICC Champions Trophy after it was revealed that he had been managing an ankle issue during the recent Test series against India.

The news was confirmed on Thursday, with selectors announcing that Cummins would skip the upcoming two match Test series in Sri Lanka due to paternity leave. In the meantime, he will undergo scans to assess the severity of his ankle problem and determine his availability for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place next month in Pakistan and the UAE.

"We'll have to wait and see the scan results and assess his progress," said George Bailey, chair of selectors. "There’s still some work to be done, and we hope to have more clarity soon," he added.

Cummins bowled 167 overs across five Tests against India, claiming 25 wickets at an average of 21.36. His workload, combined with the ankle issue, raises questions about his fitness for Australia’s opening game in the Champions Trophy against England on February 22. Before that, the team will play a one-off ODI in Sri Lanka on February 13 as part of their preparations.

Cummins led Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup title but has only played two matches in the format since, as the management has carefully managed his workload. During his absence, several players, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, and Josh Inglis, have stepped in as captains for various series.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood is expected to return for the Champions Trophy after recovering from a calf injury sustained during the Test series against India. Selectors have taken a cautious approach to his recovery.

"Josh is working really hard, and the reports on his recovery are positive," Bailey said. "However, given the time he’s missed and the demands on fast bowlers, we need to ensure he’s fully ready," he further added.

Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Sean Abbott are the three frontline pacers heading to Sri Lanka. Abbott, known for his durability, could make his Test debut during the tour.

"In addition to the conditions we anticipate, Sean’s robustness and ability to handle a heavy workload make him a valuable option," Bailey added.

Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 22, and the team management will be closely monitoring Cummins’ and Hazlewood’s fitness in the lead-up to the tournament.
