The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals
India has secured a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals after defeating Australia by 24 runs in their last Super 8 match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Monday.
This win makes India the third team to qualify for the semi-finals, joining England and South Africa. One semi-final spot is still open, with Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh vying for the position. Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, has the simplest path to qualification.
India and South Africa both reached the semi-finals without losing any matches, while England suffered a defeat against Australia during the group stage.
In the match against Australia, India set a challenging target of 206 runs, thanks to a stellar performance by their captain, Rohit Sharma, who scored 92 runs off 41 balls. India started poorly with Virat Kohli getting out for a duck, but Sharma’s aggressive batting, including an over where he scored 29 runs off Mitchell Starc, set a strong foundation. Contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Hardik Pandya helped India post a total of 205-5.
In response, Australia struggled with early losses, including David Warner in the first over. Despite a solid partnership between Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, Australia fell short. Kuldeep Yadav’s economical spell of 2/24 and key wickets from Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel restricted Australia to 181-7.
India will now face England in the second semi-final on June 27 at Guyana's Providence Stadium, setting the stage for an exciting clash.
