Pakistan cricketers might refuse to accept new central contracts if they face demotion following their disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, as reported by a local news channel on Saturday.

According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is currently waiting for a report from head coach Gary Kirsten, which will play a key role in future decisions. The PCB intends to make decisions based on the findings in this report.

In addition, the PCB will also review a report from senior manager Wahab Riaz before making any final decisions. This thorough review process has delayed the board from making any definitive announcements.

One major concern for the PCB is the potential decision to drop certain players from the next series and make changes to the central contracts. There is ongoing consideration about how players might react if they are demoted or removed from these contracts.

There is a worry that some players may choose to reject their central contracts if they are downgraded. This could lead to them preferring to play independently, without the restrictions that come with a central contract.

Earlier reports suggested that Pakistan's white-ball captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan might be demoted from Category A in their central contracts.

Sources close to the situation have revealed that a new central contract for national players is being developed. A smaller selection committee will be set up to finalize these contracts.

Despite the potential demotions, the salaries for national cricketers are expected to remain the same.
