'Power-blast overs' set to amplify action in Lanka Premier League 2024

The upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 will introduce an exciting new feature called 'power-blast overs', aimed at adding more intensity and thrill to the cricketing action. This innovation will see two additional powerplay overs implemented in each completed innings, specifically in the 16th and 17th overs. During these overs, a maximum of only four fielders will be permitted outside the 30-yard circle, enhancing the aggressive nature of the game.

The traditional powerplay rules will continue to apply during the first six overs of each innings, where only two fielders are allowed outside the circle. This dual-phase approach aims to heighten the excitement and strategy involved in the game, ensuring a dynamic viewing experience for fans.

According to Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL's tournament director, the introduction of the power-blast overs is intended to elevate the league's entertainment value and captivate cricket enthusiasts worldwide. 

"We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year," Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL's tournament director, added. "This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategise effectively to make the most of this period."

In addition to the power-blast overs, normal fielding regulations will allow a maximum of five outfielders outside the circle at any given time throughout the innings.

LPL 2024 is scheduled to kick off from July 1 to 21, featuring 20 league matches among five franchises. Each team will face off against each other twice in the league stage, leading up to three playoffs and the final showdown. This year, the tournament welcomes the new franchise, Dambulla Sixers, following changes in ownership due to legal issues involving the previous franchise co-owner.
