Abdullah Shafique has responded to criticism from former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram, who disapproved of Abdullah's 'silent' celebration following a remarkable catch in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 match between Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United. The catch dismissed Imad Wasim, and Abdullah marked the achievement by placing his finger over his mouth to quieten his critics.

Wasim Akram expressed dissatisfaction with Abdullah's celebration, suggesting that he should consider a career in the drama industry instead of cricket. Akram questioned Abdullah's accountability for the dropped catches during Australia's Test series. During a local TV channel appearance, Akram stated, "No doubt, great catch but who is responsible for dropping 36 catches in Australia's Test series? Who will answer for that? Abdullah should work in the drama industry rather than cricket."

In response, Shafique broke his silence during the post-match press conference after Karachi Kings defeated Lahore Qalandars. He acknowledged Akram's opinion, stating that it is acceptable as Akram has a cricket background and may have a better understanding. Shafique clarified that his celebratory gesture had no premeditated thought and was merely a spontaneous reaction in the heat of the moment.

"First of all it is his [Wasim Akram] opinion. It is ok if he is saying that because he has played cricket and he knows better. There was no though process behind the celebration. It was just a gesture in the heat of the moment," Shafique said.

During the match against Karachi Kings, Abdullah showcased his batting prowess by scoring his first half-century of HBL PSL 9. He made a resilient 55 off 39 balls, featuring five boundaries and a six. Despite his individual success, Karachi Kings secured their fourth win in HBL PSL 9 by defeating Lahore Qalandars by three wickets at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. Lahore had posted a total of 177-5, but Karachi successfully chased the target on the last ball of the final over, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
