Ranjan Madugalle has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first match referee to officiate 400 One Day Internationals (ODIs). This landmark event took place during the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka at Khettarama.

Madugalle's journey as a match referee began in 1993, and over the years, he has also officiated more than 200 Test matches, another record in the field. He served as the ICC's chief match referee until the position was removed.

Simon Taufel, a former elite-panel umpire and the former umpires performance and training manager for the ICC, praised Madugalle's dedication and service to cricket.

"Ranjan's longevity is remarkable. He was there at the beginning of my international umpiring career and the end. He has served Sri Lanka, the ICC and game of cricket with distinction and integrity. This milestone highlights his commitment and dedication to the sport he loves. I wish him and the umpires a successful match," Taufel said.

Before turning to officiating, Madugalle had a successful career as a cricketer, playing 21 Tests and 63 ODIs for Sri Lanka as a batter. His transition from player to match referee has been marked by a dedication to maintaining the spirit and integrity of the game.
