Afghanistan's cricket icons, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, have strongly criticized the Taliban's recent decision to shut down institutes that trained women to become nurses and midwives. This move is part of the ongoing restrictions on women's rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over in August 2021.

The closures are a further blow to the rights of women and girls, as the Taliban has already banned secondary and higher education for females and prohibited them from participating in sports. These actions have raised serious concerns about Afghanistan’s status as a Full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Rashid Khan shared his disappointment in an Instagram story, highlighting how education is central to Islamic teachings. He explained that both men and women are encouraged to seek knowledge in the Quran, which acknowledges their equal spiritual value. Rashid expressed his sadness over the closures, stating that it has not only harmed the future of Afghan women but also affected the country’s society as a whole.

He also pointed out the pressing need for female professionals in various fields, especially in healthcare. “Afghanistan, our beloved homeland, stands at a critical juncture. The country desperately needs professionals in every field, especially the medical sector. The acute shortage of female doctors and nurses is particularly concerning, as it directly impacts the healthcare and dignity of women,” Rashid said. He concluded by urging the Taliban to rethink their decision, calling it a moral responsibility to ensure girls can access education and contribute to the country’s growth.

Similarly, Mohammad Nabi shared his thoughts on the issue via X (formerly Twitter). He described the Taliban’s decision to stop girls from studying medicine as both heartbreaking and unjust. Nabi reminded everyone that Islam has always emphasized the importance of education for all, and he urged the Taliban to reflect on these values. He stressed that denying girls the opportunity to learn not only destroys their dreams but also harms the nation’s future.

Afghanistan cricketer Rahmanullah Gurbaz also expressed his support for women’s education, posting his thoughts on Facebook.
