Former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator Ravi Shastri has been awarded an honorary fellowship by Cardiff Metropolitan University. The accolade was presented to Shastri at the historic Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the venue where he played for Glamorgan County Cricket Club during the late 1980s.

The honorary fellowship recognizes Shastri's significant contributions to cricket as a player, coach, and commentator. Shastri, who was visibly thrilled by the honor, reflected on his time at Glamorgan and expressed his surprise at receiving such recognition.

“It is a great honor. It is something I never imagined when I played here long ago that would happen. I enjoyed my time playing for Glamorgan here in Cardiff and it is a pleasure to be back,” Shastri said.

The 62-year-old took to social media to share his joy about the award. “Honoured to receive The Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff Metropolitan University today,” he wrote on 'X' (formerly Twitter).

Shastri had an illustrious career with India from 1981 to 1992. He played a crucial role in India's 1983 World Cup victory and made history by hitting six sixes in an over during a Ranji Trophy match in 1985. After joining Glamorgan in 1987, Shastri played a key role in the team’s success, including their run to the semi-finals of the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1988.

Following his playing career, Shastri transitioned to commentary and quickly became a favorite among fans. He also served as a UNICEF ambassador for a decade, promoting the 'Pulse-Polio' campaign that contributed to the eradication of polio in India.

In 2017, Shastri took on the role of India's head coach, leading the team to a historic Test series victory in Australia and helping them reach the top of the world rankings in Test cricket. Under his guidance, India also competed in the inaugural World Test Championship final. After his coaching tenure ended in 2021, Shastri returned to commentary and continues to win fans over with his insightful analysis.
