Reece Topley, England's fast bowler, may not be able to play in England's first match of the Men's T20 World Cup against Afghanistan on Saturday because of an injury in the left ankle.

The 28-year-old injured his ankle after he stepped on the boundary sponge during a fielding drill.

He traveled from Brisbane to Perth in a protective boot, where the match will be played on Saturday, but England is optimistic the injury is not catastrophic.

Topley, who has been in excellent form, will be monitored throughout the week.

The left-arm recorded his highest scores for England in both T20 and one-day international cricket (3-22 and an England record 6-24) against India in the summer.

Topley, who participated in all three of England's previous warm-up matches against Australia, is fighting for the spot with Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Sam Curran, and Chris Jordan.

Tymal Mills, another left-arm speed bowler, is in Australia as a traveling reserve and might be called up if the injury proves significant. David Willey could potentially enter the squad if Topley remains unwell.
