India captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket after a 12-year career that saw him play 67 matches and score 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries.

The 38-year-old confirmed the decision on Instagram, calling it an “absolute honour” to represent India in the format.

Sharma, who became Test captain in 2022 after Virat Kohli, led India in 24 matches and took the side to the 2023 World Test Championship final.

He will continue as ODI captain and recently guided India to the 2025 Champions Trophy title.

Sharma’s decision follows reports suggesting he would be replaced ahead of the upcoming Test series in England, which begins on 20 June.

Jasprit Bumrah is a likely candidate to succeed him, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also under consideration.
