India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed a room full of reporters in Sydney, quelling speculation about captain Rohit Sharma's absence from the pre-match press conference for the final Test against Australia.

“The head coach is here. That should be enough,” Gambhir remarked, adding that Rohit’s absence was not a cause for concern. However, he did not confirm if Rohit would feature in the playing XI for the crucial Test, stating, “We’re going to have a look at the wicket and finalise it tomorrow.”

This uncertainty has intensified discussions around Rohit’s recent struggles. The Indian skipper has been in poor form, averaging just 10.93 across his last nine Tests and a mere 6.2 in the ongoing series.

India’s training session on Thursday at the SCG was optional, but all players, including Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel, attended. Rohit arrived an hour late, dressed casually in a sweatshirt and shorts, and spent time with team analyst Hari and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah before heading to the nets.

While the other batters had completed their stints, Rohit had a light 40-minute session, facing throwdowns and working on his technique. His form during the session remained a mix of promising moments and visible struggles, including an instance where he was bowled while leaving a delivery.

At the end of the Brisbane Test, Rohit admitted that while his numbers were concerning, he felt he was meeting his personal benchmarks.

“As long as my mind, body, and feet are moving well, I am pretty happy with how things are panning out for me,” Rohit said. “Sometimes the numbers don’t reflect how you feel. For me, it’s about staying mentally strong,” he added.

Reports have suggested that Rohit is considering retirement after the Sydney Test. While this remains unconfirmed, it has sparked questions about whether stepping away now, with the series still alive, might be the better option.

India’s reluctance to reveal their XI before a Test is not unusual, but Gambhir’s hesitance to confirm Rohit’s inclusion has fueled speculation. Typically, a captain is an automatic selection and the one making the final decisions.

As India prepares for a must-win encounter to level the series, keep their WTC dream alive, and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the match is set to begin on Friday, 3rd January, at the SCG.
