Ajmal has shared his insights on the upcoming 2023 World Cup, emphasizing the significance of spinners in the Indian conditions
Former Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal has shared his insights on the upcoming 2023 World Cup, emphasizing the significance of spinners in the Indian conditions.
While speaking to Cricket Pakistan in an exclusive interview, he identified four potential spinners who he believes could make a significant impact in the World Cup.
"World Cup is in India, and it's very crucial for us to have spinners over there. We need to have at least two to three spinners, for example, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Nawaz and Usama Mir - all have been bowling decently lately. To top it off, we have Shadab Khan, who's also the vice-captain. So I think, amongst these four, at least three of them should be a part of the World Cup squad," Ajmal said.
Ajmal particularly highlighted the importance of Imad Wasim in the ODI format. He emphasized that Pakistan often struggles with the new ball, and having Imad in the team would provide a valuable option. With his ability to bowl three to four overs, Imad can act as a substantial support during the initial stages of the innings.
"Pakistan should definitely play Imad Wasim in ODIs. He is not a bad player. He can play at a strike rate of 140, even if he is coming at number seven. Pakistan often struggles with the new ball except for Shaheen and Naseem, or when Naseem doesn't play; we have often seen they find it hard to tackle with the new ball. In that case, if Imad is in the team, he can bowl three to four overs and can act as a substantial option for us," he said.
Former spinner also mentioned that Imad's inclusion would allow the likes of Haris Rauf, Wasim Jr, and Shaheen Afridi to take charge with the old ball.
"Later on, Haris Rauf, Wasim Jr and Shaheen can join him with the old ball. In this way, Imad can play a supporting role in the middle, which is extremely important for any team," he further added.
