Sri Lanka Cricket announced the decision, highlighting the team's recent successes
Former Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya has been officially appointed as the head coach of the men's national team until the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya, who took on the role in an interim capacity in early July, has now secured the position following a series of impressive performances by the team under his leadership.
Sri Lanka Cricket announced the decision, highlighting the team's recent successes, which include their first bilateral ODI series victory against India in 27 years, a historic Test win against England away from home—their first in a decade—and a clean sweep against New Zealand in home Tests, putting them in contention for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
"The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team's good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the 'interim head coach'," the board statement said.
This marks Jayasuriya's first major coaching role, and he has expressed his commitment to fostering an environment that allows players to perform freely. His methods have resonated well with the squad, as evidenced by positive feedback from several players.
Before his coaching tenure, Jayasuriya served as the chief selector for the national team during two separate stints. His recent appointment comes after a two-year ban under the ICC's anti-corruption code, which he has since overcome.
