Although Lamichhane has made himself available for every game in the upcoming BBL season, he is reportedly not a top choice for any team
Sandeep Lamichhane, the controversial Nepali leg-spinner, is making an effort to return to the Big Bash League (BBL) after being denied a visa to play in the United States during the recent T20 World Cup.
The 24-year-old, who previously played for Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes, is among 432 players who have nominated for Sunday’s international player draft.
Lamichhane, known for his impressive record of 48 wickets in 43 BBL games with an economy rate of 7.42, hasn’t played in Australia since being accused of rape in Kathmandu in 2022. He was initially convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison earlier this year but had his conviction overturned on appeal by a Nepali High Court four months later. Despite his acquittal, Lamichhane was twice denied a visa to enter the US for the T20 World Cup, limiting him to playing only two matches in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Although Lamichhane has made himself available for every game in the upcoming BBL season, he is reportedly not a top choice for any team. Clubs considering his signing must ensure they meet their integrity guidelines before making any decisions. Cricket Australia has yet to comment on the situation.
It is worth noting that BBL teams are facing a tough recruitment challenge this year, with many high-profile players only available for part of the tournament. More than 50 players have indicated they can only participate in six to nine games, while 33 players are available for four to six games. Even top players like England’s Dawid Malan and New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi and Mark Chapman have only committed to one to three games.
