Shakib has not played for Bangladesh since October
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed confirmed on Sunday that all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is still part of the team’s plans for the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, scheduled for February and March next year.
Speaking at a private event in Dhaka, Ahmed acknowledged the difficulties Shakib faces in representing Bangladesh due to being away from the country for security reasons. Despite this, he assured that Shakib is included in the team’s strategy for the eight-team tournament.
"It’s certainly a challenge for Shakib to play for Bangladesh while he is away from the country. For now, he remains part of our strategy for the Champions Trophy scheduled for February and March next year," said Ahmed.
Shakib, who has been facing heavy criticism over his political ties with the Awami League, has not played for Bangladesh since October. The BCB advised him not to return to the country for the two-match Test series against South Africa and the ODIs against Afghanistan in the UAE. As a result, his participation in the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies is unlikely.
However, Ahmed expressed confidence in Shakib’s abilities and hoped that his situation would improve, allowing him to contribute significantly to the national team. He also acknowledged the challenges of playing for a national team from overseas.
"Shakib is still on our list. We hope that if a resolution to his current situation emerges, he retains the ability to contribute significantly to the national team. However, competing from overseas presents substantial challenges for any player," Ahmed added.
While Shakib’s situation remains uncertain, Ahmed emphasized the difference between playing for a franchise and representing the national team, noting that preparation and team cohesion are key for international cricket. "Given his current circumstances, it’s understandable that Shakib may not be in the best mental frame to compete at the highest level for his country," Ahmed said.
The BCB hopes that Shakib can resolve his issues and return to full fitness and focus before the Champions Trophy next year.
