The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dangled an enticing salary package, stirring Shane Watson's interest in taking up coaching responsibilities for the Pakistan team. Initially indifferent due to family obligations, Watson later stipulated a substantial remuneration, to which the PCB surprisingly acceded, offering an annual salary of $2 million, equivalent to approximately PKR 4.6 crore per month.

If this deal goes through, Watson would become the most expensive coach in Pakistan's history. The board is also willing to accept his other demands.

Watson's close sources have indicated that he is seriously considering this offer. He is awaiting a formal written offer, after which a possible 'yes' might be forthcoming. However, Watson has clarified his inability to commit to a year-round presence in Pakistan, expressing his willingness to be available for series or national team camps and accompanying the team during overseas tours.

Watson will only be responsible for white-ball cricket, and the PCB will have to find another coach for Test cricket. Wahab Riaz is also involved in negotiations with Watson regarding the contract.

CEO Salman Naseer's role is pivotal in this negotiation process, with both Naseer and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi presently engaged in ICC meetings in Dubai. Subsequent progress is anticipated upon their return. Should Watson signify his readiness to proceed with the contract, an official announcement regarding his appointment is expected in the near future.

The Pakistan cricket team's upcoming engagement is a T20 series against New Zealand in April, potentially marking Watson's first assignment as a coach, although the true litmus test awaits in the World Cup.

Moreover, the PCB is contemplating the removal of Shaheen Afridi's T20I captaincy. In this deliberation, the opinion of the incoming coach will hold significant weight, shaping decisions regarding team leadership.
