Former Indian cricketer and Champions Trophy ambassador Shikhar Dhawan has admitted that India felt immense pressure during the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan.

Speaking via a video message at the opening ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Lahore, Dhawan shared his thoughts on past tournaments.

“In 2017, we lost early wickets, which put us under pressure. We played well throughout the tournament, but the final didn’t go our way,” he recalled.

Discussing the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan, Dhawan said, “A Pakistan-India match is always special. The entire world talks about it, and both teams prepare with extra focus.”

The former Indian opener also reminisced about the 2013 Champions Trophy, calling it a memorable event in his career. “That tournament was special for me. I made a strong comeback despite tough conditions, and my century against South Africa stands out as a cherished memory.”

The Champions Trophy 2025 opening ceremony was held at Lahore’s historic Shahi Qila, attended by cricketing legends, officials, and dignitaries.

Former Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who led his team to victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, was among the notable attendees alongside fellow 2017 squad members Mohammad Hafeez, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Amir, Azhar Ali, and Haris Sohail.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, top PCB officials, and several government and political figures also graced the occasion.

Adding to the event’s grandeur, New Zealand’s Tim Southee and former South African cricketer JP Duminy, who are the official brand ambassadors of the Champions Trophy, were also present.
