The Afghanistan cricket team has earned a reputation for their fierce and competitive nature on the field, which has propelled them to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, currently taking place in the West Indies.
Despite their intense demeanor during matches, former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has revealed that off the field, Afghan players are remarkably hospitable and friendly.
In a recent interview on a local sports channel, Malik shared his positive experiences with Afghan cricketers. He praised their warmth and generosity, noting that they often bring gifts of dry fruits and engage in friendly interactions.
“Afghanistan players participate in different leagues and so do Pakistan players. They bring dry fruits for us and in general, are very hospitable,” Malik said.
Malik also addressed the occasional on-field altercations that occur during matches. He explained that such incidents are a common part of the game and can happen with any team.
"You would want to win a game for your country but there should be no space for disrespecting anyone. The players and the fans should not disrespect anyone in height of emotions,” he further added.
Despite these moments of tension during matches, Malik emphasized that Afghan players are quite different off the field. He spoke of the camaraderie he has shared with them while playing in various leagues together.
But the thing with Afghanistan players is that they are very hospitable. We have played in leagues together, we have eaten and sat together and have shared long conversations," he concluded.
