PBKS committed their second over-rate offence, earning Shreyas Iyer a ₹24 lakh fine, while MI’s third offence saw Hardik Pandya fined ₹30 lakh
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya have both been fined for slow over-rates during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash in Ahmedabad on Sunday night.
The match — between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) — was already delayed due to unexpected rain right after the toss. Although the tournament's updated playing conditions allowed for a two-hour extension to complete the game, slow over-rates from both teams pushed the match into the late hours.
For PBKS, this was their second over-rate offence of the season. As a result, Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh. MI, meanwhile, committed their third offence, leading to a ₹30 lakh fine for Pandya.
The rest of the PBKS playing XI were each fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was lower. MI players faced steeper penalties — ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fees.
Interestingly, despite MI’s third offence, Hardik Pandya escaped suspension. A rule change introduced ahead of the 2025 season means captains are no longer automatically banned after three slow over-rate offences — a departure from last season’s regulations, which saw Pandya serve a one-match ban in 2024.
On the field, it was Shreyas Iyer who stole the show with a match-winning knock of 87* off 41 balls. His heroic effort took PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014 and knocked MI out of the tournament.
Punjab Kings will now take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final on June 3. With neither side having ever won the title, the 2025 season will crown a new IPL champion.
