Michael Bracewell’s 4 for 36 kept New Zealand in the game, but Theekshana’s late boundaries, including a six, helped Sri Lanka cross the finish line with five balls to spare
Sri Lanka claimed a thrilling three-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second ODI in Pallekele, sealing the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. This marks Sri Lanka’s first ODI series win against New Zealand since 2012.
Chasing a target of 210 in a rain-affected 47-over match, Sri Lanka faced stiff resistance from New Zealand’s spinners on a tricky pitch. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73, supported by key partnerships, including a decisive 47-run stand with Maheesh Theekshana for the eighth wicket.
Mendis showed grit throughout his innings, overcoming challenges like sharp spin, cramps, and a few close calls. "Kusal Mendis reached fifty off 84 balls," showing patience by focusing on singles and doubles rather than boundaries.
Earlier, New Zealand were bowled out for 209. Mark Chapman top-scored with 76, while Mitchell Hay contributed 49. Maheesh Theekshana was outstanding with the ball, taking 3 for 31, while Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando chipped in with crucial wickets.

Sri Lanka’s fielding also shone, with stunning catches by Avishka Fernando and Pathum Nissanka, while the infielders piled pressure with tight fielding.
The third and final ODI will be a chance for New Zealand to salvage some pride, while Sri Lanka celebrates a hard-fought series win.
