West Indies captain Rovman Powell acknowledged his team’s poor performance
Sri Lanka delivered a dominant performance to level the three-match T20 series with a massive 73-run victory over the West Indies in Dambulla on Tuesday. This win marked Sri Lanka's largest ever margin of victory against the Caribbean side in T20 internationals, surpassing their previous best of 57 runs, achieved in London in 2009.
After setting a challenging target of 163, Sri Lanka's bowlers, led by their spinners, dismantled the West Indies, bowling them out for just 89 runs in 16.1 overs. The West Indies' score was their lowest ever against Sri Lanka in T20 cricket and their sixth-lowest total overall.
Debutant Dunith Wellalage stole the spotlight with a sensational performance, taking 3-9 in his four overs. Wellalage struck early, dismissing Brandon King and Roston Chase, leaving the West Indies reeling at 17-3. Sri Lanka’s other spinners, Maheesh Theekshana, Charith Asalanka, and Wanindu Hasaranga, each took two wickets, making it nearly impossible for the visitors to find a rhythm in their chase.
Sri Lanka's innings was anchored by Pathum Nissanka, who top-scored with 54 runs off 49 balls, supported by a 72-run opening partnership with Kusal Mendis. Nissanka’s knock, which included nine boundaries and a six, helped push Sri Lanka to a competitive total of 162. Contributions from Kusal Perera (24) and Kamindu Mendis (19) added to the team's strong batting effort.
West Indies captain Rovman Powell acknowledged his team’s poor performance, admitting they "didn't bat well" but praised Sri Lanka for using the conditions effectively. Despite the loss, Powell remained optimistic about bouncing back in the series decider.
The final match of the series is scheduled for Thursday, with Sri Lanka looking to claim an upset victory over the higher-ranked West Indies. After this series, both teams will head into a three-match ODI contest.
