South Africa's fast-bowling resources are running low as another key player, Gerald Coetzee, has suffered a hamstring injury. Coetzee was expected to step in for Anrich Nortje in the upcoming Champions Trophy, but his participation is now uncertain due to this latest setback. His fitness is being closely monitored, and his availability for the ongoing SA20 tournament is in doubt.

Coetzee had just returned to competitive cricket after a long period of injuries. He had missed several months, including a hip injury and a groin problem, but had shown promising form in his recent appearances. His last game was with the Joburg Super Kings against Durban's Super Giants, where he took 2 wickets for 32 runs in three overs. However, this injury may prevent him from joining the Champions Trophy squad.

Before this, Coetzee had been sidelined after a groin injury during the Test series against Sri Lanka, where he had shown great pace and fitness. He was expected to be part of the Champions Trophy squad but was overlooked in favor of the more experienced Nortje. With Nortje now also ruled out due to a back injury, Coetzee's place in the squad was almost secured, but his hamstring issue has put that in doubt.

Coach Rob Walter confirmed that Coetzee had been considered for the Champions Trophy, but now with multiple injuries affecting the team, Walter might need to look to other players. With Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder already in the squad, Walter may turn to younger options like 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka or Corbin Bosch. Death-bowling specialist Ottneil Baartman is another potential candidate.

This is just the latest in a string of injuries to South Africa’s fast bowlers. Nandre Burger is out with a back stress fracture, Lizaad Williams is recovering from knee surgery, and Daryn Dupavillon is also ruled out of the SA20 with a hamstring injury. Other fast bowlers, including Ngidi, Coetzee, Mulder, Nortje, and Baartman, have all dealt with injuries this season.

With many key players still recovering, South Africa may need to dig deep into their reserves to find replacements for the Champions Trophy. The team's fast-bowling stocks are now under serious strain as they prepare for the prestigious tournament in Pakistan.
