Sri Lanka is currently facing an economic crisis, one of the main reasons the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was contemplating shifting the tournament to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
However, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has now decided to meet with the ACC and renegotiate the terms for hosting the tournament after receiving a green signal from their government.
The board is set to meet with ACC on July 28 for further discussion regarding the matter in Dubai.
The reports suggest that the Sri Lankan government is keen on holding talks with the ACC to iron out the details regarding the upcoming mega event.
"A top government official already discussed with the SLC officials and given the green light to host Asia Cup 2022 in Sri Lanka. SLC officials will now meet ACC's high-ups on July 28 in Dubai," a Sri Lankan media reported.
The Sri Lankan government did not give a conclusive answer beforehand due to the political and economic instability. However, now Sri Lanka remains eager to retain its original position as the tournament host.
Earlier, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly addressed the media and passed his verdict that the Asia Cup 2022 has been moved to UAE.
The tournament is supposed to take place from August 24 and will commence the month after on September 11.
The first phase of the tournament will see UAE, Singapore, Kuwait, and Hong Kong go head to head against each other. One of these aforementioned teams will then join the five Asian giants namely: Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
