Sri Lanka have announced their playing XI for the first Test against New Zealand, which is set to begin on 18 September at the Galle International Stadium. This marks their return to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) action following a historic victory in England’s Oval Test.

After a successful series in England, where they secured a memorable win, Sri Lanka are keen to build on their momentum with a home series against New Zealand. The hosts have opted for a balanced squad, featuring a mix of experience and emerging talent.

Spinner Ramesh Mendis makes a notable return to the Test side after a year’s hiatus. Mendis, who last played in July 2023, has been recalled as Sri Lanka shift their focus to spin-friendly conditions at home. Alongside him, Prabath Jayasuriya, who missed the final Test against England, is back in the squad, bringing additional spin options.

The Sri Lankan lineup will feature two key spinners in Mendis and Jayasuriya, while Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara will lead the pace attack. Fernando and Kumara are expected to provide crucial support with the new ball, complementing the spin department.

Sri Lanka XI for first Test in Galle: Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya De Silva (captain), Kusal Mendis, Ramesh Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando.
