Indian men's cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday, July 22, and kicked off their first practice session in Pallekele on Tuesday under the guidance of their new head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
The team is set to face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series in Pallekele, followed by three ODIs at Colombo's R. Premadasa Stadium on August 2, 4, and 7.
The T20I series promises to be challenging for the revamped Indian side, now led by Suryakumar Yadav.
The former world No. 1 T20I batter took over the captaincy following the retirement of Rohit Sharma, who, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, stepped down from T20Is last month after India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024.
Without these legendary players, India will field a relatively fresh lineup.
As the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka in Pallekele approaches on Saturday, July 27, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has issued a stern warning to the visiting team.
Pathirana emphasized Sri Lanka's talent and potential, expressing confidence in their ability to secure a series victory over India.
“I think it will be a good challenge. India is coming with a new coach and some new players; their combination will be slightly different. But it will be a good challenge for us because they are world champions,” Pathirana said.
“We have a very good side and a lot of talent and potential. Unfortunately, we didn’t do well in the T20 World Cup. But if we can win this series, it will be a confidence booster for the next three years,” he added.
