An Indian court has finally granted bail to three students arrested for celebrating Pakistan's historic 10-wicket victory against arch-rivals India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 last year.
The students were arrested from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in October days after India's loss. However, their lawyer has shared the latest development with the media and expressed his delight.
Arsheed Yusuf, Inayat Altaf Sheikh and Showkat Ahmed Ganai were all studying in an engineering college and allegedly posted "objectionable content" on social media and chanted "anti-India" locals, according to the local media in the city of Agra.
The trio belonged to Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), where chanting against India is a common norm as it is a Muslim-majority region.
The arrest was made after Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, announced that anyone found celebrating Pakistan's victory will be arrested and will be charged with sedition.
A number of police inquiries were made as hundreds of Pakistan supporters were reported celebrating Pakistan's victory.
