Vaughan recently suggested that it would be beneficial for cricket if Root overtook Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs in Test cricket
Former Indian cricket star Sunil Gavaskar has sharply criticized Michael Vaughan over recent comments about Joe Root potentially surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s Test runs record.
Vaughan recently suggested that it would be beneficial for cricket if Root overtook Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs in Test cricket. Vaughan expressed his belief that it was only a matter of time before Root achieved this milestone.
However, Sunil Gavaskar did not take kindly to Vaughan's remarks. Gavaskar questioned why it would be better for Test cricket if Root replaced Tendulkar at the top of the record charts.
"Recently, I heard someone saying it would be good for Test cricket if Joe Root overtook Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs and centuries in Test match cricket. Please tell us what's wrong with Test cricket presently when Tendulkar is owning the record and how will Test cricket better if (and that's a huge if) an Englishman goes on to hold it. In what way will it be better? Kindly enlighten us," Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar also mentioned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would do everything possible to ensure that an Indian batter retains the record for most Test runs. He criticized the trend of criticizing the Indian team and suggested that such criticism should be met with assertiveness.
"When some commentator or media person from overseas tries to talk about the silence of the Indian crowd when India is not doing well, we should ask them why their supporters haven't come to cheer for their team. This business of India bashing has to be countered with aggression because that's the only language they understand,” he further added.
