Former Australian opening batter David Warner has been appointed the new captain of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season. The news was confirmed by the team on their social media platforms on Wednesday.

Warner’s appointment comes after Cricket Australia lifted his lifetime leadership ban earlier this year. The ban was imposed following his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering scandal during Australia's 2018 tour of South Africa. With the lifting of the ban, Warner is now ready to lead the Sydney-based BBL franchise.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Warner shared his excitement: "Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that 'C' next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through."

The 38-year-old batter also acknowledged the leadership of his predecessors. “I want to compliment the way Greeny (Chris Green) led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season," Warner said.

Warner, who has always been passionate about mentoring younger players, is especially excited about the blend of fresh talent and experienced players in the Thunder squad. "One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to give back to the younger players, to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gathered over the years. I want to help them grow so that one day, one of these young guns can step up and lead the team when I’m done," Warner explained.

The Thunder’s squad for the 2024-25 season includes a mix of established stars and emerging talent. Warner is particularly looking forward to guiding players like Ollie Davies, Jason Sangha, and Sam Konstas, who he believes have immense potential.

“We have an incredible group of young players like Ollie Davies, Jason Sangha, and Sam Konstas. They’re fearless and have so much potential. My goal is to guide them, help them learn the game, and ultimately give them the tools to thrive both in the BBL and beyond,” Warner added.

Sydney Thunder will kick off their BBL 2024-25 campaign on December 17 in Canberra, where they will face off against the Adelaide Strikers.
