India has placed Australia in a tight spot to secure a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals after setting a challenging target of 206 runs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia on Monday.

Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, now face a daunting task of chasing down the target within 15.3 overs to secure a place in the final four. If they manage to score 210 runs within 16 overs, they could still qualify. However, failing to reach 149 runs will result in their elimination from the tournament.

India, batting first after being put into bat by Australia, posted a formidable total of 205 runs. The standout performance came from their captain, Rohit Sharma, who smashed 92 runs off just 41 balls. Sharma's innings was laced with seven fours and an impressive eight sixes, breaking several records along the way.

India initially struggled when star batsman Virat Kohli was dismissed without scoring. However, Sharma continued his aggressive approach, particularly targeting Mitchell Starc in an over where he scored 29 runs, including four sixes and a four, setting the tone for India's commanding innings.

Sharma's impressive knock was curtailed by Starc's yorker just short of his century. Following Sharma's departure, Suryakumar Yadav contributed a quickfire 31 off 16 balls, while Shivam Dube added 28 runs from 22 deliveries. Hardik Pandya's late contribution of 27 runs off 17 balls helped India reach their final total of 205 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Australia's bowling effort saw Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis each claiming two wickets, while Josh Hazlewood picked up one. However, Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa remained wicketless in their spells.
