Rain delayed the start of the Twenty20 World Cup match between Afghanistan and Ireland at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

The play was scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm (0400 GMT), but the covers remained on, and the toss did not take place as planned, with the outfield wet.

Showers are forecast for much of the day, potentially threatening the blockbuster evening clash between Australia and England on the same ground.

 A hotly anticipated clash between Australia and England at the Twenty20 World Cup in Melbourne was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain on Friday.

It was the second match of the day after Ireland v Afghanistan to be washed out at the MCG.

Since both matches are now called off, all four teams will share one point each among themselves.
