Bavuma's remarks come as the Proteas gear up for their first-ever bilateral series against Afghanistan
South Africa captain, Temba Bavuma, has voiced his support for the South African Cricketers' Association's (SACA) call to end gender-based discrimination, particularly in Afghanistan, where women are currently excluded from playing sports and face severe restrictions in public life.
Bavuma's remarks come as the Proteas gear up for their first-ever bilateral series against Afghanistan, with three ODIs scheduled in the UAE next week.
Addressing the issue of women's rights, the skipper reflected on South Africa's own history of overcoming segregation and said the country has a unique perspective on human rights abuses.
"I look at it in my personal capacity. It's obviously something that is quite strong within my own values. I support the idea of inclusivity and caring for women. We want everyone to have a fair chance within society, and we know that that is something that is relevant to us as a country in South Africa. I'm fully behind the sentiments that are expressed by SACA," Bavuma said.
Last week, SACA urged Cricket South Africa (CSA) to use its upcoming series against Afghanistan to highlight the importance of women's rights, particularly the rights of female cricketers in Afghanistan, which have been suppressed under the current regime. While CSA has not yet announced any formal gestures to support Afghan women, discussions on the issue continue within the International Cricket Council (ICC).
South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, added that the decision to proceed with the tour is out of his hands, but both he and Bavuma have expressed their personal support for SACA’s stance.
"I think I've got to respect the fact that there are people in positions who have that responsibility to speak more eloquently and articulate a little bit more of it. In my own personal capacity, I definitely support the stance and the sentiments expressed by SACA. And I can understand where Rob as well is coming from in that we are selected to do a job in the cricketing field. And I think a lot of our energy will generally be dedicated to that at least," he said.
