Khawaja went on to explain that Bumrah’s ball release feels quicker than expected
Australia's opening batsman, Usman Khawaja, shared his thoughts on facing India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ahead of their upcoming Test series. Khawaja explained that Bumrah's unique bowling action can make him tough to face initially, but once a batsman gets used to it, the challenge becomes easier.
"I mean, when you first face him, it's just his action. It's a different, bizarre kind of action as his release point is very different than other bowlers," Khawaja said.
He went on to explain that Bumrah’s ball release feels quicker than expected because his front braced leg pushes the ball out.
"Once you get used to the action, it's fine. It's just very awkward at first, but when you find your rhythm, it gets better," he further added.
Khawaja has faced Bumrah 155 times in seven Test innings, scoring 43 runs without getting out. Despite Bumrah’s strong reputation, Khawaja emphasized that he doesn’t focus solely on him.
"Everyone talks about Jasprit, but they actually have a lot of other good bowlers. They've got good spinners too, which complement their fast bowlers," he added.
Khawaja pointed out that as a batsman, he focuses on where he can score runs rather than worrying about getting out.
"I'm thinking about where am I scoring runs against him. If he misses, well, then I'm coming, and if he bowls good stuff, then I'll respect that. So that's just Test cricket," Khawaja said.
The five-match Test series between India and Australia will start on November 22 in Perth. With Australia’s top-order under scrutiny, Khawaja will play a key role in helping the team get off to a strong start.
