June 29, 2024, will forever be remembered by Indian cricket fans as the day India ended an 11-year wait for an ICC title. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India triumphed over South Africa to win the T20 World Cup.
However, the celebrations were bittersweet as soon after the victory, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirements from T20Is. The following day, Ravindra Jadeja also announced his retirement from the shortest format.
VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), praised the legendary trio for their immense contributions to Indian cricket.
"My message to these three stalwarts of the game -- Virat, Rohit, and I consider Ravindra Jadeja also an extremely talented player who has contributed immensely to the development of the Indian cricket team. A big congratulations. Thank you for all the contribution they have given the great game," Laxman said in a video posted by the BCCI on their social media.
Laxman highlighted the example set by Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja for the younger generation. He expressed hope that they will continue to excel in ODI and Test cricket.
"They set an example for the youngsters to follow. The passion and the pride with which they played the game is exemplary. While they have retired from this format, I am sure that they will continue to prepare the way they did in their careers. A big congratulations for their excellent T20 career. I am sure they are going to continue to contribute in the longer version of the game," he further added.
Laxman is currently serving as the interim head coach of the Indian team, which is playing a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. India leads the series 2-1 after three games, with the fourth T20I set to take place at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 13.
