Sources say Wahab also pulled out due to personal commitments which influenced his decision
Former Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz has decided to step back from the upcoming National T20 Cup, where he was set to represent Lahore Whites.
The 39-year-old’s withdrawal comes after backlash from fans, who felt his selection was unfair to younger players. Many questioned why a retired cricketer was chosen over emerging talent.
Sources say Wahab also pulled out due to personal commitments which influenced his decision.
He had earlier taken part in Lahore’s trial matches, showing his interest in returning to competitive cricket. During a trial game for Lahore Greens at Aligarh Ground, Wahab took one wicket for 25 runs in three overs and played a quick 31-run knock, hitting three sixes. His performance earned him a spot in Lahore Whites’ squad.
However, his selection sparked debates, with many believing domestic cricket spots should be given to young players looking to prove themselves. Wahab last played for Pakistan in 2020 and was active in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) until 2023. He also completed PCB’s Level-2 Coaching Course and briefly served as a national selector.
Fans took to social media to criticize the PCB for including him in the squad instead of giving a chance to a young fast bowler.
Meanwhile, defending champions Karachi Whites are preparing to retain their title as the National T20 Cup begins later this month.
