Despite reports circulating in the Pakistan media suggesting that Shaheen Shah Afridi rejected the vice-captaincy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confiremed that selectors had no intention of naming a vice-captain for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

The 15-member squad for the tournament was announced on Friday without a designated deputy to captain Babar Azam.

“During Friday’s selection committee meeting, discussions on vice-captaincy took place. However, it was unanimously decided not to appoint anyone. As such no offer was made to anyone,” said the PCB statement.

"The side is fully united, committed and keenly looking forward to the upcoming matches in the UK and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024," the statement added.

According to sources, within the selection committee, only Yousuf was in favor of appointing a deputy to Babar Azam.

Since the overwhelming majority opposed the idea, it did not advance. If there were any private conversations between Afridi and a selection committee member, it must have been outside the purview of the selection committee.
