Wasim Akram also raised doubts about Pakistan's squad selection overall, especially when compared to teams worldwide
Former Pakistan captain and cricket legend Wasim Akram has expressed his concerns about the inclusion of Faheem Ashraf in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, calling the decision “out of the blue.”
Speaking at a press conference, Akram pointed out that Ashraf’s recent performances were below par, with a bowling average of 100 and a batting average of just 9 in his first 20 matches. He questioned the reasoning behind Ashraf’s selection, adding, "What else can I say now?"
“I haven’t thought about the team announcement yet. But a couple of things that I have thought about. For instance, Faheem Ashraf is in the team. I wish him all the best. [He is] a talented cricketer. But in the last 20 matches, his average bowling is 100 and his average batting is 9. He came out of the blue and Khushdil also came out of the blue,” Wasim Akram said.
Akram also raised doubts about Pakistan's squad selection overall, especially when compared to teams worldwide, which are opting for more spinners due to the conditions in the subcontinent. Pakistan, however, has only selected Abrar Ahmed as their spinner for the tournament.
“We are taking one spinner, a proper spinner. I think India has ordered 3 to 4 spinners in their squad. There is a reason behind that they have selected this. Anyway, the team has been selected. I wish Pakistan team all the best,” he added.
It is worth noting that Faheem Ashraf’s last One-Day International appearance came against India on September 11, 2023, during the Asia Cup, where Pakistan had a disappointing campaign. Meanwhile, Khushdil Shah's last ODI match for Pakistan was on August 21, 2022 against Netherlands, and since then, he has struggled to secure a spot in the team.
