In a compelling discussion following India’s shocking home series defeat to New Zealand, legendary bowler Wasim Akram asserted that Pakistan would have the upper hand if they faced India in a Test series on spinning pitches. The remarks came during a commentary session with former England batter Michael Vaughan on Monday, as the cricketing world reflected on the contrasting fortunes of the two nations in October.

India suffered a devastating 3-0 series loss to New Zealand, with their weaknesses against spin bowling laid bare. The Kiwis capitalized on turning tracks, with 37 of the 57 wickets taken by spinners, including standout performances from Ajaz Patel, Mitchell Santner, and Glenn Phillips. Indian stalwarts, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, experienced their worst averages at home, highlighting the team’s struggles against spin.

During the commentary, Vaughan expressed his eagerness for a Test series between India and Pakistan, to which Akram responded enthusiastically. stating, “It will be massive. It will be good for the game, for two cricket-crazy nations.” Vaughan chimed in, suggesting that “Pakistan can now beat India on the turners,” while Akram reinforced his confidence, saying, “Pakistan have a chance to beat India in Tests now on a spinning track. They have been hammered by New Zealand 3-0 at home.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan recently demonstrated their prowess in spin bowling with a remarkable comeback in their three-match home Test series against England. After a disappointing first Test in Multan, where they were outclassed, the team made significant changes, opting for a spin-heavy attack by resting senior pacers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi.

This strategy paid off as spinners Noman Ali and Sajid Khan collectively claimed 39 of the 40 wickets that fell in the subsequent matches, leading Pakistan to secure their first home series win since 2021.

The rivalry between India and Pakistan in Test cricket has been dormant since their last series in 2008, where India emerged victorious with a 1-0 series win. Historically, in their 59 Test encounters, Pakistan has won 12 matches to India’s nine, with 38 matches ending in draws.
