Woakes expressed readiness to step up if selected for England's upcoming tours to Pakistan and New Zealand later this year
Chris Woakes has found it challenging to replicate his formidable performances at home during England's overseas tours. Despite taking 127 wickets in 32 test matches on home soil, he has managed only 36 wickets in 20 matches abroad.
Criticism mounted after his lackluster showing during England's 4-0 defeat in Australia during the 2021-22 Ashes series, marking his last overseas tour in 2022.
Looking ahead, Woakes expressed readiness to step up if selected for England's upcoming tours to Pakistan and New Zealand later this year.
England is scheduled to play a three-test series in Pakistan in October followed by three matches in New Zealand in December.
"I'll play for England wherever I'm selected. I certainly wouldn't count myself out," Woakes remarked after taking 3-32 on the opening day of England's test against Sri Lanka. "The selectors will have their plans, but I'm ready and willing if chosen. It's been a while since I've played an away test, but that can bring a fresh perspective which I embrace."
Woakes highlighted his efforts to strengthen his batting skills, potentially enhancing his selection prospects. "That's definitely a plus," noted the 35-year-old, whose batting average stands at 27.76. "I've dedicated considerable effort to improve in that area, aiming to offer an additional dimension to the team."
England currently trails Sri Lanka by 214 runs after the first day of their opening test encounter.
